On September 2, 2022, the Department of Orthodox Theology and the Faculty of Philology of the University of Bialystok (UW) will present the “Dictionary of Polish Orthodox Terminology”. The presentation will be combined with a panel discussion on Polish Orthodox terminology.

The dictionary, which is the result of a grant from Białystok Orthodox researchers, contains over 4,000 entries on faith, morality, religious life and the organization of the Orthodox Church.

According to UWB, there are terms preserved in general Polish, as well as those borrowed from Greek and Church-Slavic languages. The analyzed collection was also extended to the Christian terminology before the division of the Church in 1054 and partially compared with the terminology of the Roman Church.

The dictionary is addressed to a wide range of non-specialized readers, both the faithful of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church and those who are not being Orthodox, looking for information on the meaning of words and phrases related to Orthodoxy.
