University of Gdańsk to hold international research on the contemporary understanding of masculinity and femininity

30.07.2020

The more equitable a country, the less likely men are to support efforts to promote gender equality – this is the main conclusion from the first ever such extensive research on the contemporary understanding of masculinity and femininity. The project manager is Dr Natasza Kosakowska-Berezecka from University of Gdańsk.

The Country-level and Individual-level Predictors of Men’s Support for Gender Equality in 42 Countries, published in the European Journal of Social Psychology, was carried out as part of the Towards Gender Harmony project in 42 countries by over 100 researchers.

According to research, the higher is the level of gender egalitarianism in a given country, the less likely men are to engage in activities such as signing petitions for gender equality in the workplace or supporting the promotion of women in politics or business. The higher level of gender equality in a given country seems to discourage men from supporting gender equality activities.
