The chapter of the Word of the Year competition has announced the results of this year’s event. The word “war” was the winner in the linguists’ vote. The Word of the past year in the online voting was chosen for the noun “inflation”.

The word that most characterises the past twelve months is chosen each year by internet users and, independently of the internet vote, by the chapter of linguists. The competition is organised by the Institute of Polish Language at the University of Warsaw (UW).

In the 12th competition, the chapter, whose members are experts in linguistics, chose ‘war’ as the word of the year for 2022. The linguists indicated the word ‘inflation’ in second place and the word ‘refugee/refugee’ in third place.

In the online poll, 4,500 votes were cast. The word ‘inflation’ won with more than 1,200 votes. It was followed by the word ‘war’ and the expression ‘in Ukraine’.
