Wrocław University of Technology to create a catalogue of castles and manor houses from the whole of Silesia

Politechnika Wrocławska

Researchers from several centres will prepare a catalogue of castles and defensive manors from all over Silesia. In this way, they will collect and summarise the results of research on these historic buildings from the last 60 years. The catalogue will be available in the form of a website, and a paper lexicon and e-books will also be created.

The catalogue will include at least 500 castles and fortified residences (manors and motte castles, i.e. characteristic knightly residences on mounds) from Silesia and the Kłodzko Basin and Upper Lusatia. It will include buildings that have survived to the present day, as well as those where only fragments of walls or an outline of the shape have remained.

Work on the catalogue will take five years. During this time, the researchers will summarise the results of research carried out in recent decades at individual castles and fortified manors, will also go through the archives (including the German archives, which have only recently become available) and will, for example, carry out laser scanning or drone photography of selected objects themselves.
