Books lost in 1945 returning to the Library of the Gdańsk University of Technology

The library of the Gdańsk University of Technology received 15 books from the German University of Bremen, which in January 1945 were taken out of Gdansk because of the approaching war.

The collection complements two publishing series that are inventories of cultural monuments. Particularly interesting is the “Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum”, which is the oldest scientific initiative dedicated to Greek ceramics scattered around museums around the world. Aloys Hirt’s 3-volume series “Geschichte der Baukunst bei den Alten” (“History of Ancient Architecture”) with large-format tables showing plans and plans of ancient buildings is also a unique acquisition.

As early as 2000, the University of Bremen donated 750 volumes of books that once belonged to the former collections of the Gdańsk University of Technology. The deposit received at that time initiated the establishment of the Laboratory of Historic Collections and Old Prints in the university library.
