Change of the Maritime University of Gdynia into the Maritime University

15.02.2018

– This is matter of prestige for us – says the Rector of the Maritime University Prof. Janusz Zarębski. – In Poland and worldwide it is a signal that we will be a real university, a university on a slightly higher level. This is also a signal that the Polish maritime economy is developing and that the government is interested in it – he adds.

The university authorities believe that the change of name will increase the university’s capabilities, that it allows to distinguish it from military universities. In international contacts, the Maritime University uses the name “Gdynia Maritime University”, which has more prestige and a higher position than “Maritime Academy”.

On November 15, 2017, during an extraordinary meeting, the Senate of the Maritime University of Gdynia adopted a resolution on changing the name of the high school to the Maritime University. On February 10, 2018, on behalf of Minister Marek Gróbarczyk the decision was announced by the Deputy Minister of Maritime Economy and Inland Waterway Transport, Anna Moskwa, during the Great Sea Ball.
