Conference on World War II monuments in Central and Eastern Europe

University of Szczecin invites the participants on Friday, 18 May to the international conference “Dealing with the past in 2018. Monuments of World War II in Central and Eastern Europe”. The partners of the event are the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation, the Polish-German Foundation for Science and the Association of Polish Municipalities of the Euroregion Pomerania.

After the adoption of the law on the ban on communist and other totalitarian propaganda from 2016 dealing with the past began. The act also concerns the commemoration of the victory over Nazism in World War II – including monuments of fame and victories of the Red Army and monuments of “gratitude” of Polish society or memorabilia of the Polish-Soviet “brotherhood of arms”.

The aim of the conference is to analyze the treatment of World War II monuments in Central and Eastern Europe. Participants will discuss the situation in Germany, the Baltic countries, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
