First lung transplant in Pomerania performed at the University Clinical Center

Doctors from the University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Gdańsk conducted the first lung transplant in Pomerania.

The lungs were transplanted to a 64-year-old man with an extreme form of emphysema. The patient was subjected to home oxygen therapy, but his condition worsened, which led to more frequent visits to the hospital. The Gdańsk doctors performed a transplant of both lungs without using extra-coronary circulation, which is a minimally invasive technique. On both sides, the chest was opened just for the pleural cavities to enter the transplanted organ.

– This is an advanced transplant technique, possibly the least burden on the patient. Rehabilitation of such patients is the easiest. It is not always possible to use such a technique, but it will certainly be the preferred method in Gdańsk Center – says Dr. Jacek Wojarski from the Department of Cardiac Surgery and Surgery who operated on the patient.
