Radio telescope of the Astronomy Center of the Nicolaus Copernicus University obtains greater capabilities

30.07.2019

The radio telescope of the Astronomy Center of the Nicolaus Copernicus University was developed with a system for receiving radio waves of frequencies in the range from 8 to 16 GHz, so-called X band. The first successful test observations have already been made.

Scientific research using the new system will be based on observations of the 12.2 GHz methane maser methane line. Its emission takes place in the birth areas of massive stars. Due to the nature of their evolution, newly created stars are not visible through optical telescopes for the initial several million years, hence research conducted on radio and infrared waves is currently the best source of information about them.

The 32-meter radio telescope of the university Astronomy Center in Piwnice will celebrate the 25th anniversary of its inauguration in October. Over the past quarter-century, this unusual instrument has made many discoveries. Currently, it has obtained new possibilities of learning the secrets of the cosmos.
