Dr Marcin Kotyl from the department of classical philology faculty at the University of Silesia received a scholarship from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD). The scholarship was awarded for the “Rent arrears of farmers in Roman Egypt” project in cooperation with the Zentrum für Altertumswissenschaften at the University of Heidelberg.

The project concerns tax arrears related to the lease of land in imperial property in Roman Egypt. Researchers will examine unpublished documentary papyri and learn how to calculate and collect tax arrears, the reasons for falling into debts and the terminology used in official documents.

Dr Marcin Kotyl deals with the Greek documentary and literary papirology – above all unpublished tax documents and literary texts, mainly the Iliad papyrios. DAAD is the world’s largest organization supporting international exchange of students and scientists.
