Scientists to research the use of insect protein in animal nutrition

A consortium composed of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn and the State Veterinary Institute – National Research Institute in Puławy implements a research project “Developing strategies for using alternative sources of insect protein in animal nutrition enabling the development of its production at territory of the Republic of Poland. ” The research is financed by the National Center for Research and Development.

The consumption of insects can be helpful in fighting hunger in the world. At least 2 billion people eat insects in various forms. Contrary to popular belief, insects are food not only for food shortage times – says Dr Tadeusz Bakuła from the Department of Veterinary Prevention and Feeding Hygiene at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the UWM.

Insects can provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly production of both human food and animal feed. Research carried out at UWM are to help to develop strategies for the use of insect protein in animal nutrition in Poland.


Innovations
