Dr Eng. Mateusz Borkowski from the faculty of physics, astronomy and computer science at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń received the scientific award of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN). The prize is awarded annually by the IIII PAS for significant scientific achievements in the field of physics.
Dr Borkowski from the Institute of Physics received the award for “Theoretical proposal of the world’s first optical molecular clock based on ultra-cold molecules in optical networks”. The article about creating such a clock was published in the prestigious journal Physical Review Letters in 2018.
The clock would measure the position of molecular passages at an unprecedented level of accuracy – potentially below 1 Hz, which would allow for searching for new fundamental interactions or even detecting the presence of dark matter through slow oscillations of physical constants caused by it.
