Scientists of the Lodz University of Technology patented biodegradable green polymers

06.04.2020

The Institute of Polymer and Dye Technology of the Faculty of Chemistry of the Lodz University of Technology patented polymers, which are completely ecologically green, i.e. consisting only of products of plant origin. The research was conducted by Prof. Anna Masek and her team.

Plant- based drinking straws, food packaging, chairs, toys do not have to pollute the environment. They can be made from corn, waste biomass, thermoplastic starch, polylactide (i.e. lactic acid, which is e.g. in coating on pickled cucumbers).
Green polymers can replace polypropylene and polyethylene, because they are characterized by rigidity, transparency and thermoplasticity. They are 100 percent biodegradable, the process lasts 3 years or only 100 days in the composter, depending on the conditions.
