Medical University of Wroclaw to investigate the use of plasma of the healed patients in COVID-19 therapy

28.04.2020

Scientists from the Medical University of Wroclaw will implement the project “The use of plasma of healed patients in the therapy of people with COVID-19 together with a metabolomic and laboratory assessment of the progress of plasma therapy”.

The aim of the project is primarily to assess the difference in serological response in people who survived gonorrhea with SARS-Cov-2 infection asymptomatically, and those who suffered gonorrhea with clinical signs COVID-19. In addition, researchers will assess the impact of SARS-Cov-2 antibody levels and the safety and efficacy of therapy in the Polish population.

The project assumes that people who have recovered from COVID-19 have produced virus neutralizing antibodies. Taking plasma from such a person and transfusing them to sick persons struggling with the disease can help them recover faster. The project was selected for funding by the Medical Research Agency- as part of the so-called fast track projects. The financing value is PLN 3 million.
