The Maritime University of Szczecin with Wreck Expedition Association are launching the National Program for the Search of the Wreck of the Polish Submarine ORP Orzeł. The program is supported by the Chancellery of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland and the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation.
The submarine ORP Orzeł was one of the most modern Polish vessels during World War II. The construction of the ORP Orzeł in the Netherlands was largely financed from voluntary contributions of Polish society, which was a sensation not only in Europe, but also in the world. In September 1939, the ship gained fame after a daring escape from internment in Tallinn.
On May 23, 1940, it sailed on patrol and disappeared without a trace. The reason of its sinking to this day is the secret for the Polish Navy. The search for the wreck will be extremely difficult due to the large area to be searched, and the unpredictability and caprices of the North Sea.
