The cooperation of the Museum of the Second World War, with the Institute of National Remembrance and the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin, helped to identify the remains of five Polish soldiers killed in Westerplatte in 1939 WW2 battle. Comparative genetic tests were carried out by the Department of Forensic Genetics of the Szczecin University.

Identified soldiers include: Corporal Jan Gębura; Platoon Leader Adolf Petzelt; corporal Bronisław Perucki; senior rifleman Władysław Okrasa and legionnaire Józef Kita – all died on September 2, 1939 in guardhouse No. 5.

– It is very important for the families of the victims that we remember, successfully find them and identify them. Thanks to this research, Poland is entering the elite group of countries such as the USA and Great Britain, which are identifying their fallen soldiers despite over 70 years after the end of World War II – says Dr Andrzej Ossowski, head of the Department of Forensic Genetics.
