Wrocław University of Science and Technology researchers won the Grand Prix of the Innovation Radar Prize 2020 competition. The team led by Dr Eng. Joanna Bauer of the Department of Biomedical Engineering was awarded for developing nanomaterials that could completely revolutionize the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.
– Our multifunctional hybrid nanocarriers, equipped with a kind of biological detector and a dedicated drug, intelligently recognize cancer cells. The tumor is destroyed in three ways simultaneously – through personalized chemotherapy, by magnetic hyperthermia and by photothermal therapy, causing local hyperthermia and, as a result, the death of cancer cells – says Dr Eng. Joanna Bauer.
An Indian scientist, Dr Nanasaheb Thorat, also participated in the NANOCARGO project, funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program under the MSCA Individual Fellowships. This unique method is classified as the so-called teranostics – an innovative approach combining therapy and diagnostics.
