The Catholic University of Lublin (KUL) is one of the few universities in Poland that enable prisoners to obtain higher education. The Catholic University of Lublin has signed an agreement with the Lublin Remand Center, which regulates the conditions of conducting studies for persons serving a sentence of imprisonment.
As part of the social rehabilitation process, prisoners may study family studies with the specialization of a dependent person’s assistant.
The cooperation of the Catholic University of Lublin with the remand centers began in 2013, when 36 prisoners began their studies in the field of social work with a specialization in streetworking at the Faculty of Theology of the Catholic University of Lublin.
The next project started last year, when 12 prisoners began their education in family studies. Currently, 8 of them are continuing their studies in the second year, with another 10 who have just started their studies.
