Dr Anna Kubicka’s doctoral thesis of the Faculty of Architecture of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology won the Prime Minister’s award. In her dissertation, the researcher confirmed the functioning of the imperial system of Inca measures by taking measurements and analyzing data collected in the 15th-century ceremonial and residence complex of Machu Picchu.
Her discoveries are of great importance to researchers dealing with Inca history and culture. The researcher confirmed that the measurement of the Machu Picchu city plan was supervised by imperial engineers who used the system of measures.
The dimensions of the buildings (and their elements) erected in this important Inca center were independent from the workshop tradition of groups of workers periodically working on the construction of the city but were strictly defined by the administration of the 15th-century emperor Pachakuti Inqa Yupanka.
