Scientists of the International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (MIBMiK) in Warsaw have studied in detail the RNA structure of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus genome. The article with the results of their work was published in “Nucleic Acids Research” and described as groundbreaking.
Scientists from MIBMiK, together with their colleagues from the universities of Groningen and Leiden, studied the structures formed by the genetic material of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, using a number of advanced techniques.
Research work involved examining the RNA structure of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in order to obtain information about the interaction of all bases in the genome. Viral RNA particles have been experimentally tested both directly in infected human cells and after isolation from cells.
Researchers then applied computer data analysis methods to identify regions of viral RNA that form stable spatial structures. This was the first time the structure of the entire coronavirus RNA was determined.
