Prof. Krzysztof Grzymajło, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław will study the relationship between the host, pathogen and the host microbiome in the first stages of Salmonella infection. He obtained over 3 million PLN for his project under the Sonata Bis 10 program allocated by the National Science Center.
His research will be conducted in three models: simple cell lines, organoids and an animal model. Organoids are three-dimensional structures that simulate the structure of intestines – the natural habitat of the gut microbiome. Research may become the starting point for work on pre- and probiotics to strengthen the host’s microbiome to protect it from infections.
Salmonella is responsible for infections in nearly 200 million people annually. In developing countries, it is responsible for a high percentage of deaths among children due to dehydration from diarrhea. Only in the European Union, losses caused by salmonellosis are estimated at nearly EUR 3 billion a year.
