Polish scientists found a way to build more durable and cheaper roads

11.03.2021

The construction of the pavement with the use of HiMA (Highly Modified Asphalt) allows for the construction of more durable and cheaper roads – it is a result of the recently completed research work under the project “Optimization of the asphalt road surface structure thanks to the use of modified asphalts” participated by the scientists of the Warsaw University of Technology (PW).

The project was implemented jointly by PW, Gdańsk University of Technology, Road and Bridge Research Institute in Warsaw, and companies: Budimex, Grupa LOTOS and ORLEN Asfalt.

As part of the project, the partners developed a proposal of new requirements for asphalt mixtures used in the foundation, the costs of construction, estimated the maintenance and operation of roads and determined environmental impact indicators for the asphalt pavement in which HiMA bitumens were used. It has been proven that the proposed solutions significantly extend the life cycle of the pavement and reduce the costs of road construction and maintenance.

The results of the completed research works will be included in the “Catalog of Typical Structures of Flexible and Semi-Rigid Pavements”, commonly used by road designers.
