The Lancet published the first-ever global report on cardiovascular disease in women. This is the result of the work of a committee set up by this journal, consisting of 17 women – experts in the field of cardiovascular diseases representing all regions of the world. The committee includes Dr Agnieszka Olszanecka from the 1st Department of Cardiology and Interventional Electrocardiology and Hypertension of the Jagiellonian University Medical Collegium.

Every year as much as 35 percent of women in the world die of cardiovascular disease. It is the leading cause of death in this group. This mortality is increasing especially among young women. They are underdiagnosed and under-treated, and also under-represented in clinical trials, – says Dr Agnieszka Olszanecka.

The authors of the report emphasize many insufficiently recognized risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. They include social factors (e.g. unemployment) related to anxiety and depression, and differences due to socio-economic and cultural status, race and poverty.
