Scientists from Polish and Lithuanian scientific institutions are collecting data on cyanobacteria blooms. The project “Algae – Economy Based Ecological Service of Aquatic Ecosystems / Algae – ecological economy” is financed under the Program of the European Commission Life and funds from government agencies of Poland and Lithuania.
The project aims to collect macroalgae and cyanobacteria biomass and transform it into high and low-quality products. In Poland, the Institute of Environmental Protection of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow and the departments of biology and chemistry of the Adam Mickiewicz University are responsible for its successful implementation.
Experts from the Polish Academy of Sciences emphasize that although cyanobacteria have a negative impact on humans and the environment, they are also a rich source of biologically active compounds. Many of them have been used in medicine, cosmetics and agriculture. They are used to enrich the soil with nitrogen compounds, as well as herbicides and insecticides.
