Polish scientists have developed an innovative implant for surgical treatment of inguinal hernia. Researchers and engineers from the Krakow University of Technology (PK), the Medical University of Gdańsk and the company Tricomed SA from Łódź worked on the world’s first 3D hernia mesh, adapted to the anatomy of a specific patient on the basis of computed tomography.
The creation of an implant that cooperates with the human body was possible by the use of computed tomography images to develop models of the anatomical structures of the body and on their basis to design the shape of the implant, and then the forms for its production – says Dr Eng. Krzysztof Karbowski, co-inventor from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
The world’s first implantation of a personalized Optomesh 3D ILAM implant of Polish production in the world will take place on September 14 in Toruń, during the workshops accompanying the Congress of the Society of Polish Surgeons.
