Dr Eng. Konrad Ocalewicz, the University of Gdańsk from the Department of Marine Biology and Ecology of the Institute of Oceanography at the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography won the Scientist of the Future 2021 Award in the Science for a better life in the future category.
The award is granted by the Smart Development Center to scientists with a vision for the future, carrying out research and projects for people, open to informing the public about ongoing research and showing a proactive attitude to business cooperation.
Dr Ocalewicz was awarded for his research project “The dynamics of telomerase and telomeric DNA in rainbow trout with growth disorders and disturbed gonad development”. Telomeres are structural elements of chromosomes that protect against the loss of genetic information during cell replication. Excessive shortening of telomeric DNA is a signal to stop cell division, induce aging and apoptosis.
