Researchers from the University of Gdańsk and the Norwegian University of Bergen will carry out the project “Limits of life: diversity, adaptation strategies and the biotechnological potential of microorganisms living in the depths of the Arctic sea.” (INDEPTH) “. The project is carried out as part of the GRIEG competition, financed by Norwegian funds.
Scientists want to study the unique biodiversity of microbes living in the depths and vents of the Arctic’s deep-ocean geothermal ridges based on a modern metagenomic approach.
– The advanced sequencing methods enable the analysis of DNA, isolated directly from the environment. Our main goal is to get to know the microorganisms of the sea depths through the analysis of metabolic pathways, adaptation strategies to life in extreme conditions and the characterization of proteins crucial for their functioning – says Prof. Tadeusz Kaczorowski from the Department of Microbiology, University of Gdańsk.
