Scientists from the International Eye Research Center (ICTER), a part of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IChF PAN), have developed a new technique that allows for a rapid and non-invasive method of assessing the physiological state of the retina.

Until now, the possibilities of testing the retinal response to flickering light stimulation have been limited. Scientists from ICTER used their invented time-frequency optical tomography OCT (Spatio-Temporal Optical Coherence Tomography STOC-T) to record retinal optoretinograms.

“For the first time, we can observe tiny fundus signals that are generated by individual photoreceptors. This has not been achieved by anyone before. It would also not be possible without the previous research of our scientists and the development of the STOC-T technique”, says Prof. Maciej Wojtkowski, the head of ICTER.
