Researchers from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, together with Sim Factor, a Warsaw-based company, are beginning work on a full-cab simulator and training system for tram drivers. The technology will use a system of cameras, sensors and eye-tracking, the university reports.

The simulator will be the first of its kind on the market. It will be placed on a moving platform (the motorman will feel vibrations in it as in a real tram while riding on rails), and the sensors and technologies placed there will allow a multi-faceted evaluation of the driver’s actions.

The motorist will be tested in different weather conditions, with varying levels of vehicle traffic and certain assumptions in pedestrian traffic. The system will assess how it performs in specific conditions and when it catches the driver’s problems in certain situations, this will be a signal to the trainer to focus more with the motorist on driving in such conditions.
