Scientists from the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Gdansk have won the Platinum Award of the 16th INTARG International Invention and Innovation Fair. The researchers were awarded for a multifunctional composite implant material for filling bone defects and regenerating bone tissue.

The invention is the result of the GlassPoPep project, which aimed to develop and manufacture multifunctional composite biomaterials for filling bone defects. These will combine the properties of bioactive, antimicrobial glass, biopolymers and pro-regenerative peptides and peptide fibrils.

Combining bioactive glass, biopolymers and a biologically active ingredient in a single biomaterial and then testing the composites thus created in less than four years was the biggest challenge of the project. The resulting composites were also tested in vivo. The research shows that they have excellent bone-forming properties.
