Dr Katarzyna Tandecka from the Mechanical Faculty at the Koszalin University of Technology is working on a novel method for creating ultra-thin graphite layers on smoothed surfaces. The researcher won funding for her project in the Miniatura competition of the National Science Centre.
Ultra-thin graphite layers can be widely used in conditions where other methods of reducing the friction coefficient in micromechanisms are not possible. They can be used, for example, in embedded systems in living organisms, as well as in other systems used at low temperatures or in unusual environments.
They will be useful for systems that are inactive for a certain period of time and are required to be efficient without the need for additional maintenance (systems with difficult access to kinematic nodes, systems used in military technology or designed for vacuum and low-temperature applications).
