Katarzyna Stachniak, a doctoral student at the International Environmental Doctoral School at the Centre for Polar Studies of the University of Silesia, MA, is carrying out research work on Spitsbergen. Her research concerns the identification of the hydrological and hydrogeological conditions of the Renardbreen glacier catchment (Bellsund).

The doctoral student is the manager of a project entitled ‘Hydrological modelling of the drainage response of glaciated catchments to Arctic climate warming’, conducted within the framework of the Prelude 21 competition of the National Science Centre.

Currently, the first seasonal monitoring of surface water outflow from the Renardbreen catchment, monitoring of groundwater levels, and sampling of glacier foreland sediments, as well as surface and precipitation water samples for laboratory studies, are being carried out. Hydrological monitoring is supported by meteorological monitoring and studies of surface changes occurring within the catchment.
