Scientists at the University of Silesia studying global warming in Spitsbergen

22.08.2018

A team of scientists from the University of Silesia set out on the trip to Spitsbergen. Researchers will investigate the reactions of Glacier of Hans and its surroundings to the intense warming of the climate. The first Silesian expedition was set out on Spitsbergen 40 years ago.

To understand the mechanisms of global climate change, the polar regions must be closely observed. The warming of Spitsbergen climate is almost three times more intense than in Silesia and Poland. Responses of the natural environment to higher air temperatures are clearer and they anticipate changes in Polish latitudes. Accurate study of these changes makes it easier to predict the effects of global warming.

Mateusz Czapla – geodesist, Dominika Bałdys – geographer, and Paulina Waleczek – graduate student specializing in quantitative glaciological research will use the latest methods – scanning, drones, automatic digital cameras and recorders of environmental parameters to research global warming.
