Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, and Lublin top the academic ranking of Polish cities, which was prepared by the Polish Economic Institute (PIE).

There are currently 1.2 million students in Poland, studying at 364 universities located in 94 cities. Over the past decade, the number of higher education institutions has fallen by nearly one-third. The majority, 60%, of Polish higher education institutions are non-public units with a vocational profile. Most universities (69) operate in Warsaw, followed by Wrocław (26), Poznań (22) and Łódź (20).

The ranking was based on eight criteria relating to universities located in particular cities: prestige, number of graduates on the labour market, scientific potential, innovation, scientific effectiveness, educational conditions and internationalisation.
