Researchers from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw (University of Warsaw) together with researchers from Belgium and Germany have identified a new enzyme that plays an important role in the proper functioning of the human and animal body. The results of the research have been published in the “eLife” magazine.

Dr Jakub Drożak with his colleagues from the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw Sebastian Kwiatkowski, Agnieszka Seliga, Dr Takao Ishikawa, Dr Iwona Grabowska and Dr Adam Jagielski, in collaboration with scientists from the Institut de Duve in Belgium and the DeutschesKrebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ) from Germany, identified the gene coding for one of the most mysterious orphan enzymes found in mammals – actin methyltransferase.

The examined methyltransferase realises important, though not fully understood functions in the muscular and nervous system as well as in the development of some cancers.
