Congress of Polish Mathematicians in Krakow

06.09.2019

Celebrating the centenary of the founding of the Polish Mathematical Society (PTM) began on September 3, 2019, with the Jubilee Congress of Polish Mathematicians in the auditorium Maximum of the Jagiellonian University. The meeting included presentation of the scientific achievements of Polish mathematicians. The conference will last until September 7.

– The theme of this congress should be Roger Bacon’s words: “Mathematics is the door and the key to learning. Whoever disregards the achievements of mathematics is harmful to all science, because those who do not know mathematics cannot know other exact sciences and cannot know the world”- said Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, Vice-Rector of the Jagiellonian University.

Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Włodzimierz Zwonek read a letter sent to the organizers and participants of the congress by the Minister of Science and Higher Education Jarosław Gowin. The deputy prime minister wrote that “as an educated philosopher, he pays homage to one of the most beautiful phenomena that the human mind knows and practices – pure mathematics, which feeds only with truth, science and beauty, without any utilitarian motivation.”
