Dr Michał Sarna and Krystian Mokrzyński from the Department of Biophysics of the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Krakow are co-authors of an article in the Journal of Pineal Research, in which they indicate the participation of melatonin in the process of cell pigmentation.

The article “Melatonin exerts oncostatic capacity and decreases melanogenesis in human MNT-1 melanoma cells” on the regulation of pigmentation in pigment cells is the result of collaboration between scientists from the University of Munster, the Jagiellonian University, the University of Texas and the University of Alabama.

Factors regulating the phenomenon of melanin synthesis in cells have been researched for years. In their work, the authors showed that melatonin, which is produced by the pineal gland and is involved in the regulation of the biological clock, can also affect the synthesis of melanin in cells.
