A new discovery of scientists from the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław

03.09.2021

The geodetic measurements of Szczeliniec Wielki in the Stołowe Mountains, carried out by employees of the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics of the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław , have indicated that the height of the summit given in textbooks and atlases – 919 m above sea level – lacks 3 meters.

Precision leveling, allowing to achieve sub-millimeter accuracy, as well as gravimetric measurements and Global Navigation Satellite Systems were used in their measurements. It turned out that the assumed height of the highest point of Szczeliniec Wielki is incorrect, and the correct height is 921.84 m above the Baltic Sea level and 922.01 m above the North Sea level. For this reason, it will be necessary to update the height of the Stolowe Mountains in textbooks and atlases.

Measurements in the Stołowe Mountains have been regularly carried out by the Students’ Scientific Club of Surveyors at the Wrocław University for almost 50 years. This year, the highest peak was measured for the first time.
