Students and staff from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and students from Ukraine have built a refugee aid unit based on a design by Shigeru Ban. It is a prototype of a building that can serve as a temporary shelter for refugees, but also as an office or a building for other purposes, due to its modularity.
SHS (Styrofoam Housing System) is based on prefabricated elements that are lightweight and inexpensive to produce, which are then joined together to form a whole – that is, a house of about 35 square metres. The design of such a solution was prepared by the famous Japanese architect Shigeru Ban in 2015 for people who lose their shelter in emergency situations. He called it the New Temporary House.
Students from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and students from Ukraine from Lviv Polytechnic, Chernivtsi Fedkovych National University and Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, were involved in the creation of SHS.
