Dr Andrzej Żak from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology won the Polish final of the international Falling Walls Lab competition for researchers, students, innovators and pioneers whose ideas can change the world. He will now present his project in Berlin.
During the presentation “Breaking the wall of photodynamic therapy”, the scientist talked about his work on the construction of a new device for observing previously invisible and unknown phenomena of bacterial-light interaction.
Dr Żak modified the transmission electron microscope. It allows observing the effects of treating bacteria with light during photodynamic therapy in live and at the nanoscale. This allows patients to avoid complicated surgical procedures.
Falling Walls Lab is a competition organized by the Falling Walls Foundation and financed by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Berlin Senate, and Google and Huawei corporations.
