A team of scientists from the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice will test whether physical activity contributes to the brain’s resistance to stress by acting through signalling pathways in cells forming the blood-brain barrier. The project has received funding of almost PLN 2.8 million from the National Science Centre.
Regular physical activity has a beneficial effect on the functions of the central nervous system and contributes to improving mood and cognitive abilities (including memory and learning). It brings with it another important benefit – stress resilience, consisting of the ability to adapt in the face of adversity, trauma, threats or prolonged stress.
The results of the researchers from the Molecular Research Laboratory of the Silesian university may serve to discover new therapeutic targets based on natural physical activity, which seems very important for improving public health.
