A team of students from the chemistry department at Adam Mickiewicz University has reached the final of the ‘Direction: Space’ competition organised by the ‘New Space’ Foundation and the Empiria and Knowledge Foundation.

The aim of the competition was to design an innovative, ground-breaking experiment that could only be carried out in microgravity conditions on the International Space Station. The Poznan students proposed an experiment investigating the effect of reduced gravity on the direction of plant root growth. The results of the experiment would allow for better planning of future space missions, i.e. planning the cultivation of plants on planets other than Earth.

The team consisting of Joanna Wojtukiewicz, Gabriel Ławiński, Gustaw Fita, Natalia Bogdanowicz, Arkadiusz Taras, was shortlisted as one of 12 finalists and thus entered a mentoring programme to improve the proposed project and prepare it for sending to the International Space Station.
