Reconstruction of the life of people with disabilities in the 14th-18th century in Central Europe is the goal of the research project “Past Lifeways and Deathways of the Disabled in 14th-18th Century Central Europe – DIS-ABLED”. Research is conducted by the University of Liverpool in cooperation with Arizona State University and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
Central Europe offers unique and rich data on written, archaeological and osteological sources and materials for disability research. The sources allow for a unique look at particularly interesting socio-cultural aspects of disability.
The authors of the project will show the heritage of people with disabilities in Central Europe, which is part of the European heritage, and raise public awareness of the history of disabled people. A detailed archaeological analysis will help explain how people with disabilities were treated and what was their social status.
