Archaeologists from the University of Warsaw started in Sudan the first excavation season within the project called “Urban Metamorphosis of the community of a Medieval African capital city”.
Researchers from the Center of Mediterranean Archeology of the University of Warsaw received the Starting Grant of the European Council for Scientific Research.
Field work in Dongola, Sudan, will be conducted under the direction of Dr Arthur Obłuski, who in September this year became the chairman of the International Society for Nubian Studies.
The aim of the project is to analyse the process of transformation and nature of the transformation of Dongola from an important Christian center, the capital of the Kingdom of Makuria, into a Muslim city.
