Dr Eng. Karolina M. Zielińska-Dąbkowska, assistant professor at the Department of Urban Architecture and the Cultural Department of the Faculty of Architecture at the Gdańsk University of Technology has published her article in the latest issue of journal “Nature”.
In the text, the Gdansk scientist warns that skyscrapers, which number in modern metropolises has grown by 141% over the decade, deprive residents of access to natural light, posing a threat to health, well-being and sustainable development of cities. Such development will include new urban areas not only in Asia, but also in historic European cities.
The price of development is limited access to natural light, which is important for our health and well-being. Researchers have proved that the lack of exposure to the sun’s rays may contribute to deficiencies of vitamin D or myopia, which by 2050 is to affect half of the world’s population.
