The unique garden on floating and above-ground pontoons was created as one of 14 new projects as part of this year’s Hortillonnages Amiens International Garden Festival. It was designed by Dr Eng. Aleksandra Gierko of the Faculty of Architecture from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology and graduate student Natalia Bańdo.

Gaia’s Ark is made up of five floating and above-ground gardens in pontoons and rescue floats, which is a reference to the widely understood process of migration. Each element of the installation also has a symbolic meaning. The floats floating on the water refer to wetlands: some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world.

The international festival in Amiens, France, is an event organised by the association Art & Jardins | Hauts-de-France. The festival’s installations are created on the site of former working gardens where vegetables were grown for hundreds of years. Today, they are private plots and green spaces consisting of many small islands surrounded by water.
