Students from the Doctoral School of Natural Sciences at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań participated in the interdisciplinary Summer School “Integrating Biogeosciences in Studies of Arctic Ecosystems (IGLOO)”. The School took place near central Spitsbergen and included fieldwork, laboratory work and lectures, reports the university.

As part of the School, participants collected hundreds of soil and freshwater sediment samples, dozens of vascular plant specimens, collected ice cores, and made some measurements related to the Arctic environmental monitoring planned at the university.

The students attended lectures by specialists working at the University Centre in Svalbard and vascular plant identification classes. They observed terrestrial and marine mammals, and looked at the impact of glaciers on the functioning of marine and terrestrial ecosystems and landscape formation.
