An article about the latest scientific discovery made by Prof. Krzysztof Murawski, Błażeja Kuźmy, Dariusz Wójcik from the Department of Astrophysics and Theory of Gravity of the Maria Curie Skłodowska University (UMCS) in Lublin was published on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration website (NASA).
The article concerns the discovery of pseudo-shocks, i.e. the so-called “unsuccessful shockwaves” in the atmosphere of the Sun. Due to the high number of waves, they can warm up the atmosphere of the Sun and contribute to solve the problem of heating the corona – the external atmosphere of the Sun, which is about 200 times hotter than its surface. A group of UMCS scientists performed numerical simulations of observed phenomena.
