Artificial intelligence in the fight against prostate cancer

30.04.2021

In Poland, about 15 patients die from prostate cancer every day. Researchers of the Applied Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Information Processing Center of the National Research Institute (OPI PIB) in Warsaw used artificial intelligence (SI) to improve imaging diagnostics of prostate cancer. They obtained the best results with the use of neural networks.

-We are conducting interdisciplinary research which shows that artificial intelligence can effectively improve the work of doctors. The results are very promising and I am convinced that also they will help other scientists to develop modern technological tools which are used in the diagnosis of not only prostate cancer but also other diseases – said Dr Eng. Jarosław Protasiewicz, director of OPI PIB.

Scientists from OPI PIB have developed the eRADS research platform, which is used to standardize descriptions of medical reports. This tool allows to objectively assess the clinical significance of the change on the basis of the five-point PI-RADS scale. The platform also enables the collection of research data, which in the future will help to create solutions that will automatically estimate clinically significant features. Artificial intelligence was used to support decision-making processes.
