Research by scientists from the University of Lodz (UŁ) in collaboration with the Norwegian Maritime Institute in Bergen has contributed to a significant increase in knowledge of the flora and fauna of the seabed off the coast of Ghana. More than 300 new species of marine organisms were discovered.

The surveys, which reached depths of 1,000 m, made it possible to assess the state of the marine environment, which is particularly vulnerable to the impact of human activities such as oil and gas extraction and climate change. The work of the team of biologists, led by Professor Krzysztof Pabis, provided valuable information on the complex interrelationships between organisms and environmental factors, which became a reference point for similar such studies in the future.

The researchers also succeeded in selecting the most vulnerable areas of the bed and sites in need of urgent protection. Species that are potential indicators of change were identified and guidelines for future monitoring were provided.
